History
Index Fresh began in 1914 as Index Orchards with the goal of packing
and marketing lemons and oranges from Orange County, California.
Initially formed as a grower owned corporation, Index became a cooperative
in 1929 under the name of Index Mutual Association. Citrus was the
primary product until the 1950’s when avocados were introduced
into the product line with the absorption of sister cooperative,
United Avocado Growers. As the avocado industry began to flourish,
avocados replaced citrus as Index’s primary product in the
1960’s and 1970’s.
In 1989 Index moved its headquarters from La Habra, Orange County
to Bloomington in San Bernardino County, building a state of the
art packing and cooling facility. Updating its name to Index Fresh
of California, Index continued to expand adding Chilean avocados
in the early 90’s. Index entered the Asian pear business in
1997 and markets Asian pears from Chile and California. In response
to growth in its business and changes in the avocado industry, Index
has come full circle converting from a cooperative to a grower owned
corporation in 1999.
Today, Index with the new name Index Fresh, Inc. operates as a
grower-owned corporation with the goal of providing excellent products
and service to consumers, customers, growers and trading partners.
